Can CBD Oil Show Up on a Drug Test?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD oil, is an oil that is extracted from the cannabis plant and diluted with a carrier oil, such as olive or coconut oil. This extract has many uses. It is relied upon for both its health properties for beauty, reduction in acne, to being proactive as a preventive measure from heart disease.

Some individuals appeal to this alternative method rather than consume medication daily. This can include individuals that have chronic pain, epilepsy, depression, anxiety and other health-related problems.

There is a concern that has come up with using this type of oil. Since some states have legalized this particular oil for medical reasons, there is also the challenge that comes with taking this type of herbal remedy or alternative medication. If people are using this as a supplement, will this type of oil cause an individual to fail a drug test?

Different Types of Drug Tests

Drug tests can be given for numerous reasons. A doctor might request for a patient to take a drug test if a patient is exhibiting bizarre behaviors while administering treatment. An individual might be seeking employment or someone could simply need the test to participate in a sporting event to prove there were no enhancements used to improve performance. So, can one take a CBD oil drug test?

Right now, there is no specific CBD oil drug test available. There is one commonly used drug test referred to as, “urine drug testing” (UDT). It is a quick and effective test that evaluates urine to see if it contains any drugs. It also identifies specific antibody complexes that connect with the immune system to detect amphetamines, methamphetamines, PCP, cocaine, and opioids. However, this widely chosen test does not always pick up all forms of drugs. One compound of cannabis called THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main component that gives individuals that euphoric feeling. This is the same component that is sought after when taking such a test. So, the answer to this question, will you fail the test, is a yes and a no.

What If You Fail The Test

Yes, there is a possibility you might fail the test. It depends where you get your oil from (If it contains THC, then it will show up on a test if one consumes between 1000-2000 grams in one day). There is also the possibility THC will not show up. Then there is another scenario where it will show up in such a small amount that one would get the result of what is called a “false positive”. This is when you get a positive result of THC when you should not have gotten that result at all.

The Solution

So, the answer to the question is, yes and no! The percentage of scoring a positive-negative may be slim, but there is still the possibility that it will show up on the test. If you or a loved one is taking this type of supplement, it is recommended to avoid this oil as a preventive from failing any drug test that will be administered.
